If you have Sabra humus in your refrigerator, you may want to check the
date on it. The company has voluntarily recalled their hummus products
manufactured before November 8, 2016 due to possible listeria contamination.
Sabra Dipping Co. revealed that bacterium was found in its facility after
an FDA inspection, but not in the completed products that were tested.
So far, no illnesses have been reported. This is a familiar recall, as
the company also recalled around 30,000 cases of hummus just last year
due to listeria concerns. Thankfully, the company chose to warn the public
over even the slightest possibility of contamination.
Listeria can cause serious infections – especially in children, pregnant
mothers, elderly individuals, or those with weak immune systems. Sabra
hummus is just the most recent addition to a list of product recalls due
to concerns of listeria. The bacteria have also been reported in connection
to Eggo waffles, certain Blue Bell ice cream flavors, frozen vegetables,
and raw milk this year.
Sabra is urging consumers to discard any product with a “Best Before”
date up to January 23, 2017. This date can be found on the lid of each
container of hummus. The only Sabra products not affected are Sabra Salsa,
Sabra Organic Hummus, Sabra Guacamole, and Sabra Greek Yogurt. The full
list of effected products and company statement can be found at
http://sabra.com/recall.html. Customers can contact Sabra to submit contact information for reimbursement
if affected by the recall.
Recalls, especially those that can directly affect consumers, often times
have a serious affect on the safety of those who purchase them. Fortunately,
Sabra chose to voluntarily take steps to prevent illness in consumers
before any reports were made. The company has also committed to an extensive
factory-wide cleaning and sanitation process and is working with food
safety experts to further these efforts.
