Recall of Swiss Roll Snacks

If it seems like we’ve posted frequently about food recalls and illnesses – it’s because we have. Salmonella seems to be a daily news topic these days, but we’re hopeful that reporting on these outbreaks might prevent further illnesses.

Another recent instance of salmonella in the news happened when Flowers Foods, Inc. announced a voluntary nationwide recall of Swiss Rolls last month. The recall also included a certain brand of bread that is sold primarily in the South: Captain John Derst’s Old Fashioned Bread.

Swiss Rolls being recalled are distributed nationwide and sold under brand names including:

  • Food Lion
  • Mrs. Freshley’s
  • H-E-B Baker’s Treat
  • Great Value
  • Market Square

In addition to the Swiss Rolls, the Georgia-based food company is also recalling Captain John Derst’s Old Fashioned Bread, which is distributed in Georgia, Florida, Alabama, North Carolina and South Carolina. For a full list of the recalled items, including their UPC numbers and affected dates, visit Flower Foods’ website.

All of the recalls are in response to the potential presence of salmonella as a result of possible presence in the whey powder used in both products. While the powder is supplied by a third-party supplier, Flowers Foods felt it necessary to make the recall announcement themselves. The company advises customers to throw away all products listed in the recall, or return them to the original place of purchase for a full refund.

Fortunately, no illnesses have yet to be reported. We’re hopeful that early reporting and awareness will lead to no sicknesses as a result of salmonella infections.

The number of salmonella outbreaks this year has been at an alarming high. This sickness is especially serious to young children, the elderly population and those with weakened immune systems. The most common symptoms of salmonella, even for those that are healthy, include: fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Medical attention should be sought as quickly as possible after suspected salmonella poisoning.
