2.4 Million Toyota Prius Vehicles Recalled

Earlier this month, yet another automobile recall was announced – this time affecting Toyota hybrid cars. The potential defect is estimated to have affected 2.4 million vehicles worldwide, 807,000 of those in the United States.

Toyota believes that in “rare situations”, vehicles may experience defects that cause the engine to enter a stalled state, even while driving. While power steering and braking would still function in this situation, instances where drivers are traveling on interstates or highways could be especially dangerous nonetheless.

This is not the first time these types of defects have been identified in Toyota Prius hybrid vehicles. Some date back to 2014 and 2015 when recalls were announced for similar reasons.

While no reports have been released attributing crashes or injuries to the recall, Toyota is urging owners to use caution. The affected models include 2010-2014 Prius and 2012-2014 Prius V hybrid vehicles.

Toyota stated that owners will be notified when they can get their vehicles repaired. Dealers will update the software on the affected vehicles at no charge.

In a separate recall this month, Toyota Tundra trucks (2018-2019), Sequoia SUVs (2018-2019) and Avalon vehicles (2019) have been connected to an airbag defect. This recall includes roughly 188,000 vehicles worldwide.
