Marietta automobile accidents can include a variety of vehicles and situations. A topic on our minds less often is that of accidents involving pedestrians, or those not in vehicles. Cobb County pedestrian accidents can involve a person walking, jogging, or simply standing that is struck by a motor vehicle. When a car, truck, or SUV hits someone near Marietta roads that has that little protection, the consequences are often disastrous for the pedestrian.
Each year in the United States, there are over 110,000 pedestrian accidents. Most of these pedestrians are seriously injured or killed as a result. In 2010, the National Center of Statistics and Analysis reported 168 pedestrian fatalities in the state of Georgia. Pedestrian fatalities account for 11% of motor vehicle fatalities.
Hit and Run Pedestrian Accident in Woodstock
Just this month, a construction worker for C.W. Matthews Contracting was involved in a pedestrian accident while working on Interstate 575 in Woodstock. At approximately 9:30 AM on Friday, June 1st, the construction worker was standing beside a tractor-trailer parked on the side of the road when the car veered into the construction zone and hit him. Woodstock police spokeswoman Brittany Duncan told Channel 2 Action News that the worker sustained pretty serious injuries and was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta. The person responsible for the accident fled the scene, so police began looking for a gray 2006 GMC Sierra truck soon after the accident. After a tip, police officers were able to apprehend the suspect and administer a field sobriety test. Charges have now been announced in the hit and run accident, against 53-year-old Canton resident Kenneth Gonzalez. He faces charges of reckless driving, aggravated battery, failure to report accident with injuries, failure to report accident with property damage, hit-and-run, and failure to maintain lane. No updates have been given on the construction worker’s health at Kennestone.
