Tips for Potentially Disastrous Driving Situations

As Marietta car crash lawyers, we hear about numerous types of auto accidents every week. The cause of crashes often begins with situations that could have been prevented if the driver had been more prepared for a potentially disastrous situation.

Researching situations and occurrences that often lead to crashes can not only aid in preventing injuries in your vehicle, but it can also prevent injuries to those in other vehicles that may become involved in a crash that you cause.

The first situation we’d like to warn people of is when a vehicle runs off the side of the road and overcorrects. This occurs in most single-vehicle crashes and many times involves multiple automobiles because one driver overcorrects and collides with another. When a driver allows their vehicle’s right tires to fall off the side of the roadway, there is often a loud noise either from rumble strips on Interstates or the uneven ground on the sides of smaller roads. This noise serves as an alert to drivers that have fallen asleep, are distracted, or become inattentive. In some instances, drivers correct their steering wheels to the left more than is necessary to re-enter their lane of traffic. This can lead to a vehicle spinning out of control and exiting the highway, even flipping over in severe instances. The only way to avoid this from happening is to remain calm. If you drift off the roadway, do not overreact. Simply slow your vehicle by letting off the gas and move your vehicle back onto the road gently. The only instance in which a brake should be used is if there’s an object imminent and you do not want to hit it, in which case you should move back onto the road faster. Being smooth in your steering is the most important aspect of preventing a crash when your tires drop off the side of the road.

Another situation that can be scary and causes crashes is when the throttle of an automobile is stuck. We never expect it and it is always scary. The solution is actually simple. Move the gear shift into neutral. This will work in both automatic and manual vehicles, although it may take some effort to shift to neutral while traveling at high speeds.

Poor visibility in a vehicle also causes many automobile crashes in Georgia. Whether it’s due to foggy windshields, outdated windshield wipers, or some other issue, it is important to remain calm. Turning on your air conditioner to the fresh air setting will allow a vehicle’s windows to clear. If you need windshield wiper blades, do not procrastinate. You never know when there will be a downpour in Georgia.

In all instances, the most important thing to remember is that remaining calm will help. Panicking never helps, so try to think through the situation and correct it before simply giving up. In the event that you or someone you know are injured in a car crash due to another person’s mistakes, you should contact an injury attorney as soon as possible to find out if you have a personal injury claim. The money recovered for you can help pay medical expenses and more. For more information or a free consultation, contact Jones & Swanson today at (770) 427-5498 or online at www.awjlaw.com.
