As temperatures rise and summer break begins, families flock to pools, rivers, lakes, and beaches. However, enjoying time in the water comes with its own set of risks.
Jones & Swanson encourages everyone to brush up on you water safety knowledge with the tips below to keep you and your family safe this season:
GENERAL WATER SAFETY
- Use the buddy system: Avoid swimming alone in case of unexpected danger or emergency.
- Keep an eye on kids: Children should never be left unattended, as they are most vulnerable to drowning.
- React responsibly: In case of emergency, brush up on your CPR skills and be prepared to call 911.
- Practice sober swimming: Being intoxicated impairs your motor skills and reaction time, which are integral to water safety.
- Feet first: Avoid the dangers of shallow water-diving by entering bodies of water feet first.
LAKE AND RIVER SAFETY
- Be careful of currents: Instead of fighting against river currents, swim perpendicular to the current.
- Watch your step: Slippery rocks and unexpected drop-offs can cause slip and falls.
BEACH SAFETY
- Again, be careful of currents: Much like lakes and rivers, swimming in the ocean poses the risk of being caught in a rip current. Remember to remain calm and swim parallel to the shore.
- Be aware of waves and wildlife: Check out the beach flags to be aware of any potential threats in the water.
POOL SAFETY
- Avoid pool drains: Suction entrapment can occur because of the strong force of water circulation that can attract hair or jewelry.
- Observe pool rules: Adhere to public pool rules—don’t run or play aggressively.
- Implement barriers: For in-home pools, keep your children safe by making the water less accessible through pool covers, gates, and more.
