Summer Travel Safety Tips

Schools around Georgia are out for summer vacation and the official start of the summer season is fast approaching on June 21. Summertime brings numerous activities including swimming, cookouts, camping and more. Of the many great things about summer, perhaps the most exciting is summer vacation. Whether your family is taking a road trip or simply driving to the nearest beach, there are important safety tips you should keep in mind.

  • Have your vehicle tuned-up before leaving on long summer trips. Your nearest dealership can not only check the fluid levels, battery, and tires on your automobile, but will also check for recalls. Having a well-maintained vehicle is the first step to a successful road trip.
  • If you are traveling with children, double check that car seats and booster seats are installed properly before starting a road trip.
  • Make sure that all vehicle occupants are buckled, even before pulling out of the driveway.
  • Prevent drowsy driving by planning your route in advance to include frequent stops along the way.
  • Put away your phone and any other items that may distract you while driving for the duration of the road trip.
  • Be mindful of motorcyclists, pedestrians, and bicyclists while traveling. Each of these roadway users has the right to safety.
  • Make sure that your Emergency Roadside Kit is fully stocked in the event of a break down. Some of the most important things to keep in the emergency kit are:
    • Cell phone
