Subaru Recalls Over 250K Vehicles for Loss of Power Issue

Jones and swanson 1

Did you recently buy or lease a Subaru? If so, you may have been drawn to the brand because you like Subaru’s off-road capabilities and drivetrain engine or because Subaru is a fun and affordable car for outdoor enthusiasts.

However, if you recently acquired one of the newer Ascents, Crosstreks, Foresters, or Impreza vehicles, your Subaru may be one of the 250K vehicles included in one of the manufacturer’s latest recalls.

Recalled Vehicles Can Lose Power While Driving

On December 12, 2019, Consumer Reports published an article about how Subaru is recalling over 250K of its vehicles for a dangerous issue involving a faulty engine part.

Which vehicles are affected by the recall? Included in the recall are late model Ascent, Crosstrek, and Forester SUVs, but it also includes Impreza sedans and hatchbacks. The vehicles are being recalled for an issue where the cars can suddenly lose power while they are being driven, which could lead to a car accident and injuries.

At issue is a faulty positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve that can allow oil to leak in places it doesn’t belong. Additionally, the faulty part can separate and damage components of the engine, which could cause the engine to stop working properly and suddenly lose power. If someone is driving one of the recalled vehicles and they notice more tailpipe exhaust, which could be gray or bluish in color, this could be a warning sign that their engine is about to lose power.

To see a list of the vehicles recalled, click here. To find out if your Subaru is included in the recall, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) website. Enter your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) to see if your vehicle is included in the recall. If no recall appears, it means your vehicle is not currently subject to a recall.

If your vehicle is included in the recall, the dealership will replace the faulty part or it will replace any damaged parts free of charge. “Subaru has already contacted owners of the 2017-2018 Crosstrek and Impreza. The automaker will also reach out to owners of the other vehicles starting on Jan. 24, 2020. Owners can call Subaru customer service at 844-373-6614,” according to Consumer Reports.
