Jones & Swanson

Roses are Red, Violets are Blue, Slip and Fall? We’re Here for You.

This Valentine’s Day, as with every other day, Jones & Swanson stresses the importance of making sure you and your loved ones stay safe when enjoying this day of love and appreciation!

Here are a few things you should keep in mind while you’re planning and enjoying this day.

When staying in

If you and your loved ones plan on staying home to celebrate, remember these essential tips.

Fire Safety:

Romantic evenings are nothing without candles! Ensure that all candles are placed on stable surfaces away from flammable materials. Never leave them unattended while lit.

As it was also just National Burn Awareness Week, this should be fresh in your memory for importance!

Food Safety:

If you plan on cooking together, ensure that you are following food safety guidelines to prevent foodborne illnesses. Here’s an easy how-to guide on how to cook your foods to a proper temperature!

Consider your loved ones’ allergies as well. Ask before you surprise someone as they may be allergic to the very thing you want to gift them! If you notice someone is having a reaction:

  • Immediately call 911.
  • Ask if the person is carrying an epinephrine autoinjector (EpiPen, Auvi-Q, etc.) If so, ask if they need help injecting into their thigh.
  • Have the person lie up and be still.
  • Loosen all tight clothing, and keep them covered.
  • If vomiting begins, turn the person to their side to prevent choking.
  •  If there are no signs of breathing. Begin CPR. Continue chest presses at a rate of 100 per minute until 911 has arrived.
  • Even if the person seems okay after a while, still seek emergency help.

 Remember The Pets:

Chocolates are one of the number one gifts to give and receive on Valentine’s Day, just remember this is toxic for cats and dogs. Ensure pets are secure if you have guests over and other potentially toxic items are out of reach!

When going out

While being the most common form of celebrating Valentine’s Day, a date or a stroll around town could spell disaster for those unprepared.

Alcohol Awareness:

If you plan on enjoying alcoholic beverages, remember to do so responsibly. Know when to cut back, and plan for a safe return home with a designated driver. Never get behind the wheel while under the influence. Auto accidents are heightened on this day.

Personal Safety:

If you plan to have a first date or are meeting someone for the first time (especially through online dating) plan on a public place and let a family member or friend know your whereabouts. Utilize location sharing through apps like Life360 or Apple location sharing with Find My!

Stay Aware of Surroundings:

With increased foot traffic in most busy spaces, this is a prime time for pickpockets and scammers to prey on the unsuspecting and distracted! Just remember to be cautious of suspicious activity and report incidents when you see them. Plan if you intend on walking alone home.

Likewise, more foot traffic means room for more possible tripping hazards. Spills, forgotten items, and busy restaurants/venues are of increased likelihood during this day. The last thing you want is to slip and fall when you’re trying to fall for someone instead!

Have fun and stay safe!

Jones & Swanson hopes that everyone has a safe and enjoyable Valentine’s Day and remember safety comes first with everything!
