Top Causes of Car Accidents in 2021

auto accidents in Georgia

Car accidents are common, especially in the metro Atlanta area. Unfortunately, they’re also a leading cause of death in the United States year after year. 2021 was no different.

Despite technology advancement in vehicles such as collision warning and lane assist, the numbers continue to rise. This could be a result of increased vehicles on roadways, an increase in distracted driving or any number of reasons.

2021 Saw The Largest Six Month Increase In Traffic Crash Deaths Ever Recorded.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s report titled Early Estimate of Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities for the First Half (January-June) of 2021, the first half of 2021 recorded more auto accident fatalities than any six-month increase ever before. The total number of deaths was estimated to be 20,160 – an increase of 18.4% over 2020.

What Are The Most Common Causes Of Auto Accidents?

Not surprisingly, the number one cause of car accidents in the United States is distracted driving. Others include:

  • Distracted driving
  • Speeding
  • Drunk driving
  • Driving under the influence of drugs
  • Reckless driving
  • Poor weather conditions
  • Failure to maintain lane
  • Failure to yield right of way
  • Failure to use turn signal
  • Vehicle defects

Being involved in a car accident can lead to several outcomes including property damage, permanent or debilitating injuries, loss of wages and even death.

There are ways you can help try to prevent these accidents from happening. If you can’t prevent a crash, it then becomes important to establish what caused your crash, who was at fault, whether they have sufficient insurance coverage to cover damages, and other questions. At Jones & Swanson, our personal injury attorneys do that work so our clients can concentrate on what matters – healing and recovering.
