Deep Roots, In Marietta
Just as wine country comes alive during the fall harvest season, Deep Roots Wine Market & Tasting Room is preparing for their first fall on Marietta Square. As we all gear up for one of the most beautiful and busiest seasons of the year in Georgia, now seems like the perfect time to kick back and raise a glass to a new local business that has chosen to put down roots in our corner of the world.
Jones & Swanson was fortunate to have the opportunity to meet with owners Libby Davenport and Katie Dugan and learn more about the story behind their business. What began as a longtime friendship between two neighboring families eventually grew into a shared vision of a business partnership.

The Journey to Deep Roots Marietta
While most of Jones & Swanson’s Local Business Highlights begin with standard questions of “Tell us a little about yourself?” and “What did you do before opening your local business?”, Libby & Katie’s answers were not what we were expecting for the owners of a wine market and tasting room. Libby had spent years in early childhood education as a preschool teacher, and Katie is a registered dietitian who specialized in pediatric feeding therapy. Some people wouldn’t assume that those careers would guide them on this journey, but somehow it led to the perfect pairing for their partnership.
Now, their story starts in 2018, as loving patrons, when Deep Roots opened its flagship store in Roswell, GA. Back then, Katie and her husband Brian, as well as Libby and her husband Chris, were immediate fans of the new concept and quickly joined the Deep Roots Wine Club. The couples would regularly meet at the monthly wine club tasting events to catch up on what was going on in each other’s lives, and what their children had recently been up to. However, as their children grew older, the wine club tasting discussions started to shift into what the next season of their own lives might look like.
Through their shared enjoyment of the Deep Roots experience, Libby and Katie often joked about how much fun it would be to work there. But eventually those conversations evolved into something more, and by the end of 2024, the couples decided it was time to take a leap of faith, to share the memories that Deep Roots had given them, to a new area of Metro Atlanta.
The Davenports and Dugans spent much of 2025 doing what they refer to as “recon,” visiting communities and downtown districts of many cities in the metro area. They said that when they walked around, they tried to “imagine Deep Roots becoming a part of the community.” Eventually, Marietta became their standout city. Commenting that “there was no other location like it” and that “it was always busy, there was always something going on, and there was a wide range of people.” The most important trait they’ve noticed? Marietta had an energy they were not finding anywhere else.
After months of scouting open locations through the city, the couple decided that 107 Church Street is exactly where they would be putting down roots. Libby and Katie exclaimed that “the space just felt right!” Its proximity to a growing number of new and established restaurants, as well as other fantastic local businesses, would put Deep Roots along a naturally traveled path that many people would take when exploring what Marietta Square has to offer.

What Makes Deep Roots Marietta Special
While, of course, wine is at the center of the Deep Roots Marietta experience, it was clear after discussing the vision that they want it to be so much more; Katie and Libby want it to be a place where people can gather. That could mean stopping by to meet some friends for a glass of wine after work, including it on your date night lineup, attending their fun trivia or bingo night with some coworkers, signing up for their specially curated tasting from a particular vineyard or winery, or even joining them for the monthly wine club events. Something that feels especially fitting considering the wine club is exactly where this journey started.
While the Davenports and Dugans are honored to bring the Deep Roots name and concept they fell for many years ago to Marietta, they have added a few new ideas to make it their own, mainly the addition of Deep Roots beer. Curated beers were something meaningful to Libby, who said that her appreciation for wine developed over time, but she has always been more of a ‘beer person’.
Katie and Libby feel that this addition means that you don’t have to just enjoy wine to have the experience that Deep Roots offers. They also discussed that the decision not to have a kitchen for food was a purposeful one. They desire for their customers to frequent the other businesses on the Square and welcome their guests to bring in the favorites to go along with their wine.
While wine tastings are at the heart of the Deep Roots experience, there is so much more to enjoy at their Marietta Square location. You can follow Deep Roots Marietta on social media to keep up with all their upcoming events like Wine-o Bingo, themed trivia, live music, wine pairing luncheons and dinners, and charity events (the list goes on!).
A New Season on the Square
This upcoming season marks a milestone for the Dugans and the Davenports, as their first fall as business owners on Marietta Square, and there isn’t a more appropriate time for it. In wine country, the fall harvest represents the culmination of months of patience, work, and care. Fall is also the beginning of something new, which could be said for Deep Roots Marietta.
