In the latest recall notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Volvo Car USA has notified them of a rearview camera issue affecting over 400,000 vehicles spanning the 2021 to 2025 model years.
DETAILS OF THE NOTICE
This recall notice states that the rearview camera display image might not show properly when the car is in reverse, decreasing driver visibility and increasing the risk of a crash. This is causing vehicles to fail to meet the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard for “rear visibility.”
According to Volvo manufacturers, affected vehicles will show a warning message saying the “camera is temporarily not available.” Park assist, automatic braking, and cross traffic alerts should still function.
This recall affects the following vehicles:
- 2021-25 XC40 SUVs
- 2022 V90 wagons
- 2022-24 C40 Recharge electric SUVs
- 2022-25 S90 sedans, V90 Cross Country wagons and XC60 SUVs
- 2023-25 S60 sedans, V60 and V60 Cross Country wagons, and XC90 SUVs
- 2025 EC40 and EX40 electric SUVs
HOW CAN I RESOLVE THE ISSUE?
Software will be updated in person at an authorized dealer or an over-the-air update for the park module for free. Vehicles that were previously repaired for the issue under recall 25V282 will also need to have the new remedy performed.
Volvo will begin notifying affected vehicle owners via mail on Feb. 16. If you have questions or concerns in the meantime, you can call customer service at 800-458-1552 with the recall number R10333. You may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
WHAT DO I DO IF I NOTICE A REARVIEW CAMERA PROBLEM?
Experiencing any rearview camera problem can put you in a very dangerous situation. If your vehicle is experiencing a problem while you are driving in reverse, we recommend you do the following:
- Stay calm.
- If you are able to, stop the vehicle immediately.
- Check your surroundings. Use both the side and top mirrors. Fully turn your head left and right to check your blind spots.
- Slowly guide your car into a designated parking spot or area out of direct traffic.
- Once you are stopped, put the car in park.
- Grab your vehicle’s manual to find any software reset information.
- If you or anyone else has been injured or property has been damaged, call 911. If not, call a tow truck.

HOW CAN I KEEP UP WITH MY VEHICLES’ MAINTENANCE?
If you want to avoid running into internal or external problems in the future, keep up with the following:
- Always make sure your rearview mirrors are adjusted properly to see both left and right lanes, and through the window on the back of your vehicle.
- Consult your owner’s manual for recommended maintenance time frames.
- Top off your vehicle’s fluids regularly (power steering, coolant, engine oil, transmission, and windshield wiper fluids).
- Examine your tires (rotation, sidewalls, pressure, and tread depth).
- Check your lights (headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals).
- Schedule a call in advance with your local dealership or chosen mechanic for a professional inspection as needed.
