We recently posted about the importance of having smoke alarms and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms in your home. These devices were created to protect us from smoke, fire, and CO poisoning in our own homes. As consumers, we depend on these products to warn us of threats that could injure ourselves or family members. Unfortunately, product defects and recalls can affect these life-saving devices. A recent recall of approximately 1.2 million Kidde residential alarms reminds us that although we take the appropriate steps by purchasing smoke and CO alarms for our homes, we must also stay up-to-date with the latest product recalls from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. It is up to us to properly educate ourselves on the ever-changing list of products that may pose a danger to ourselves and our families.
The Kidde alarms included in the 2014 smoke alarm recall are hard-wired and were manufactured from December 18, 2013 until May 13, 2014. The recalled smoke alarm model number is i12010S and it features a sealed 10 year battery system within the unit. The recalled smoke/carbon monoxide combination alarms included in the recall are:
- Model number of il2010SCO, which would have been manufactured between December 30, 2013 and May 13, 2014. This model also includes a sealed 10 year battery inside.
- Model KN-COSM-IBA, manufactured from October 22, 2013 through May 13, 2014. This unit has a place on the front of the alarm for AA batteries to be easily installed or replaced.
Each of the three recalled alarm models would have been hard-wired into your home’s electric power and is white in color. They are each 5-6 inches in diameter and are round. These products may have been purchased at a variety of retail locations, including Home Depot, Amazon.com, CED, and more for $30-$50 each. The cause of the Kidde alarm recall is that these units may fail to warn residents of a fire or carbon monoxide (CO) existence after a power outage occurs. While no injuries have yet been reported as a result of the defects in these Kidde alarms, it is still important that you contact the manufacturer at (844) 553-9011 to request a free replacement alarm.
